As someone who loves to read, when they announced at the beginning of my sophomore year that Amory High School would be starting a book club, I was very excited. I had only moved here towards the end of my freshman year, and I didn’t know many people. So, I saw it as the perfect opportunity to make some new friends. At the first book club meeting, about ten people showed up. It was a small number, but I liked it that way because it gave everyone a chance to talk. All the people there were kind and loved books. We ate snacks and talked about everything from our favorite genres to tropes we despised. After I left the first meeting I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. As it has grown over the years, I’ve made a lot of friends and memories of being a part of this club, and I’m going to list a few of the reasons my fellow classmates should join.
As stated above, the first reason I joined was to make friends. Coming to a new school can be challenging, but joining clubs can help you meet those who share the same interests. All the people who are in the book club are very nice and welcoming. They make you feel heard and valued, and that is why this club has grown exponentially in the years following its creation.
Second, everyone has a voice. We all decide on what books we read, and nobody is forced to read a book they don’t want to. If you aren't a fan of Genre, we encourage you to give the book a chance, but if you can’t get through it, you are not pressured to.
Last, we are a big family of book nerds! We eat food, play games, and talk about what the rest of the year will bring. On the drive home from that first meeting, I knew that I was going to enjoy it - and I was right! I attended almost every meeting, and I made many friends there. So, if you're looking for a new activity to participate in, book club welcomes you with open arms!
